India joins WEF’s G20 

The G20 Global Smart Cities Alliance on Technology Governance will make the global norms and policy standards for the use of connected devices in public spaces.

World Economic Forum (WEF) India has joined the league of 15 of the world's leading city networks and technology governance organisations and that will work towards advancing the responsible and ethical use smart city technologies.

  • They host nations of the Group of 20 (G20) in 2019 and 2020.
  • Smart city technologies offer huge promise, but it may be a Pandora's box. 
  • According to Jeff Merritt, Head of Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics and Smart Cities at the World Economic Forum (WEF) says it is a critical first step to accelerate global best practices, mitigate risks, and foster greater openness and public trust regarding the collection of data in public spaces.
  • India is at the forefront of this urban transformation and is committed to ensuring that our cities develop in a way that is smart and sustainable. 
  • Smart city technologies can help:
  1. Decrease traffic congestion
  2. Combat crime
  3. Improve resilience during natural disasters 
  4. Reduce greenhouse emissions.  

About G20: 

  • The G20 started in 1999.
  • The Group of Twenty (G20) is the prime forum for its members’ international economic cooperation and decision-making.
  • The "Group of 20", Countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, plus the European Union.
  • It has an aim to discuss policy pertaining to the promotion of international financial stability.
  • The G20 is supported by international organizations.
