India launched the biggest evacuation exercise on 7 May

India has launched the most significant evacuation exercise Vande Bharat Mission, under which 64 flights will be operated by the government from 7 May 2020 till 13 May 2020 to safely bring home around 14,800 Indian nationals stranded in foreign countries amid the lockdown due to the coronavirus.

Key Points

  • During the operation, stranded Indian Nationals will have to stay in touch with the Indian embassies in the countries they are residing.
  • The 64 flights will include 10 flights from the UAE, 7 from the UK, 7 from the United States of America, 7 from Bangladesh, 7 from Malaysia, 5 from Saudi Arabia, 5 from Singapore, 5 from the Philippines, 5 from Kuwait, 2 from Bahrain, 2 from Qatar, and 2 flights from Oman.
  • Fifteen of these flights will come back with people to Kerala, after which eleven flights each will return to Tamil Nadu and Delhi.
  • Seven flights will take people back to Maharashtra and Telangana, whereas five flights are scheduled for Gujarat.
  • Citizens from the Gulf countries will be brought back by the maximum number of flights in the first week of repatriation.
  • Over 350 Indians from UAE will return home on 7 Mat 2020. The Indian Navy has also sent three of its ships under Operation Samudra Setu to get back stranded citizens from Maldives and UAE.
  • INS Jalashwa and INS Magar will get back Indians from the Maldives while INS Shardul has been diverted to Dubai to get back the expatriates.
