INDIA, MALDIVES INK CONTRACT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF FIVE ECO-TOURISM ZONES

Context

India and Maldives to develop five eco-tourism zones.

Details

  • It will be developed in Addu atoll of island nation
  • These eco tourism zones are part of grant projects which are being implemented under the High-Impact Community Development project (HICDP) scheme.
  • It involves a total grant assistance of 5.5 million US dollars to the Maldives.

About Eco-tourism Zones

  • Ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education”.

Principles of Ecotourism

  • Minimize social, physical, psychological, impacts and behavioral.
  • Build cultural and environmental awareness and respect.
  • This also offers positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
  • Providing direct financial benefits for conservation.
  • Help in generating financial benefits for both local people and private industry.
  • Delivering memorable interpretative experiences for visitors that help raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climates.
  • Design, construction and operation of low-impact facilities.
  • Recognition of the rights and spiritual beliefs of the Indigenous People in your community and work in partnership with them to create empowerment.

About Atoll

  • It is a ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets.
  • It surrounds a body of water called a lagoon.

About Addu

  • It is a city in Maldives.
  • It consists of the inhabited islands of the southernmost atoll of the archipelago.
