INDIA RANKED 46TH IN THE GLOBAL INNOVATION INDEX 2021

Context:

Recently, India has been ranked at 46th place in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2021 released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

About the Ranks:

  • India has climbed 2 spots from last year’s ranking. India has been ranked at the 2nd spot after Vietnam, under the Lower middle-income category group.
  • Switzerland has got the top rank.
  • The Global Innovation Index 2021 captured the innovation ecosystem performance of 132 economies and tracked the most recent global innovation trends.

India’s Improving Rank:

  • The improvement in the GII ranking is owing to the knowledge capital, the vibrant start-up ecosystem, and the amazing work done by the public and private research organizations.
  • The Scientific Departments like the Department of Atomic Energy; the Department of Biotechnology; the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Space has played a pivotal role in enriching the National Innovation Ecosystem.
  • The NITI Aayog has been working to ensure the optimization of the national efforts for bringing policy-led innovation in different areas such as electric vehicles, biotechnology, nanotechnology, space, alternative energy sources, etc.

India’s Rank in the Past Years:

  • India has been on a rising trajectory over the past years in the GII, from a rank of 81 in 2015 to 46 in 2021.

Global Innovation Index:

  • It is an annual ranking of countries by their capacity for, and success in, innovation.
  • Publisher of the Index: INSEAD; Cornell University; World Intellectual Property Organization.
