India Records all time high Export of Coir and Coir Products

An all-time high export of coir and coir products for the year 2019-20, worth Rs. 2757.90 crore was registered by India. The new exports figures are Rs.30 crore higher than in 2018-19, which was Rs. 2728.04 crore.

Key Points:

  • India exported coir and coir products weighing 9,88,996 MT during 2019-20 in comparison to 964046 MT exported in 2018-2109.
  • The coir products that registered major growth are coir Geo-textiles, coir pith, coir rope, coir rugs and carpets, power-loom mats, tufted mats in terms of quantity and value.
  • Products that depicted decline in terms of quantity and increased in terms of value are coir yarn, handloom mats, power-loom matting and rubberized coir.
  • The major constituents of the Coir export:
  1. Coir pith with earnings from earnings equivalent to Rs.1349.63 crore that forms 49% of the total coir products from the country.
  2. The Coir fibre constitutes 18% of the total exports and amounts to Rs. 498.43 crore.
  3. Under the export, value-added items form 33% of the total exports.
  • Some of the major ports of India through which exports of Coir take place are Cochin, Chennai Ports and Tuticorin.
  • The other key ports of export of coir and coir products are Kolkata, Mumbai, Vishakapattanam etc.
