India-Russia Relations (Its divergence and conversions)

India-Russia Relations (Its divergence and conversions)

Why Important:-

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin summit in Sochi.
  • Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA)-Its impact on India-Russia Defence relations.
  • International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) project.
  • India's engagement with five-nation Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)
  • Moscow’s Increasing closeness with Islamabad.

Issue :-

Russia has been a strong and time-tested partner of India. Both the countries have a long history of strong strategic, defense, economic, space and diplomatic relationship. Increasing ties of India with U.S.A needs a proper balance.

Reason of Downfall of India-Russia relations:-

  • Closeness of India-U.S relations- It started with Indo-U.S civil nuclear deal in 2008.
  • Then Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), gives access, to both countries, to designated military facilities on either side for the purpose of refueling and replenishment.
  • Downfall of U.S.S.R (United Soviet Socialist Republic) reduced its global stature and India’s 1991 economic reforms opened market for Western Countries, therefore further dilutes Russian significance.
  • Growing engagement of Russia-Pakistan - Russia’s decision to supply Mi-35 attack helicopter to Pakistan and joint military exercise between Russia-Pakistan (Druzhba)

 Reason of Convergence:-

  • Russia is major supplier of Defence Equipment for India.
  • Major joint ventures such as KA-226T Twin-engine utility helicopter and Brahmos cruise missile and 5th generation fighter jet programme.
  • Space cooperation which includes Chandrayaan-2 (a joint exploration mission by I.S.R.O-Indian Space Research Organization and Russian Federation Space Agency)
  • Recent developments in Indian foreign policy are crucial for safeguarding Indian National Interest and cordial relation between all major world powers.
