INDIA SUCCESSFULLY FLIGHT TESTS INDIGENOUS HYPERSONIC TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR VEHICLE

Context

Today, India successfully flight tested Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV).

Details

  • It marks a giant leap in indigenous defence technologies.
  • It is a significant milestone towards Sashakt Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat. 
  • DRDO has demonstrated capabilities for highly complex technology which  will serve as the building block for Next Gen Hypersonic vehicles in partnership with industry.

About Hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle (HSTDV)

  • It is an unmanned scramjet demonstration aircraft for hypersonic speed flight.
  • It is being developed as a carrier vehicle for hypersonic and long-range cruise missiles.
  • It will have multiple civilian applications including the launching of small satellites at low cost.
  • It is equipped with a scramjet engine.
  • It is capable of cruising  at a speed of mach 6 and it can move up to an altitude of 32.5 km (20 miles) in 20 seconds.
