INDIA TAKES OVER THE PRESIDENCY OF UNSC

Context

On August 1, 2021, India took over the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Key Points:

  • India’s 2-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council started on January 1, 2021.
  • The August presidential term will be India’s 1st chairmanship during its non-permanent membership of the Security Council in 2021-22.
  • S. Tirumurti India’s permanent representative to the UN will conduct a press conference on the Security Council’s work plan for the month.
  • He will also give a briefing to UN member states which are not presently permanent members of the Council on its work for the month.

During India’s Presidency:

  • India will be hosting various high-level events in the 3 main areas of counter-terrorism, maritime security and peacekeeping.
  • India’s priority is Maritime security therefore it is important for the UNSC to take a comprehensive approach to it.
  • India is mainly focused on using better technology to guarantee the safety of peacekeepers and how to bring offenders of crimes against peacekeepers to justice.

About UNSC:

  • It is one of the 6 main organs of the United Nations (UN).
  • It works for ensuring international peace and security, ratifying any changes to the UN Charter and suggesting the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly.
