Regulating Act 1773

This was the first step taken by British Government to control and regulate the affairs of East India Company in India.

It laid the foundation stone of central administration in India. Also for the first time, political and administrative functions were recognized.

Features:

  • The Governor of Bengal became Governor-General of Bengal.
  • An Executive council was created with 4 members to assist the Governor-General (GG).
  • First GG of Bengal: Lord Warren Hastings
  • Governors of Bombay and Madras presidencies became subordinate to the GG of Bengal.
  • Establishment of Supreme Court in Calcutta with one Chief Justice and 3 other judges.
  • The employees of EIC were barred from taking bribes and also participating in local trade.
  • Another Regulating Act of Settlement in 1781 was brought to deal with the deficiencies of Regulating Act 1773.
