India’s first trans-shipment hub - Vallarpadam Terminal in Kerala

The review of the developmental activities of Vallarpadam Terminal of Cochin Port, Kerala was undertaken by the Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge) Shri Mansukh Mandaviya.

Key Points:

  • The Vallarpadam Terminal of Cochin Port has been proposed to be the first trans-shipment port of India, managed by DP World (Dubai Ports World).
  • The government aims to achieve the vision of creating a Trans-shipment Hub of India and pioneer hub in South Asia.
  • Development of the port will ensure that the Indian cargo trans-ship through Indian Port.
  • The terminal at the port that handles containers stores them temporarily and transfers them to other ships for its destination is known as Trans-shipment Hub.
  • The Kochi International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT), also called as the Vallarpadam Terminal locally is strategically located on the coastline of India and fulfils all the criteria required for its development as a trans-shipment hub.

Note:

  • The criteria’s for the development of the trans-shipment hub include:
  1. Position concerning proximity to International sea routes;
  2. Located at least average nautical distance from all Indian feeder ports;
  3. Proximity to key hinterland Indian markets;
  4. Infrastructure and capacity for scaling up.
