INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY: OCTOBER 11

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY: OCTOBER 11

Context:

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has declared October 11 as“Indigenous Peoples’ Day”. He became the first U.S. president to officially adopt this day.

About the Day:

  • The day was announced after seeing the strength and power of the Indigenous people and the immeasurable positive impact these people have made on all aspects of American society.
  • “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” is usually observed on the second Monday of October.
  • This day marks the Indigenous communities that have lived in the United States for thousands of years.
  • It grew increasingly common as it was replaced by Columbus Day. Columbus Day celebrates a Spanish explorer and crew on three ships, Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, in 1492.

Background:

  • For the past several years, states such as Alaska and New Mexico adopted this holiday and chose to abandon the Columbus festivals.
  • They also heeded calls from Indigenous groups and other citizens for not celebrating Christopher Columbus, who was an Italian navigator. On his name, the holiday is named so.
  • Most U.S. cities and states commemorated the day before the US president announced it.
  • Colleges and corporations have also recognized the day.
  • The 1st country to officially recognize the day was "South Dakota", which officially adopted the day as American Indigenous Day in 1990.
  • Countries like Oregon, Alaska and Vermont also officially designated this day as a holiday.
  • Cities such as California, Berkeley, Seattle and Minneapolis were among early adopters.
