Inorganic-organic hybrid compound synthesised which can inhibit cancer cells

The Institute of Nano Science & Technology (INST) Scientists from Mohali, have synthesised a novel inorganic-organic hybrid compound that can prevent lung, breast, and liver cancer cells, opening up new opportunities for metallodrugs.

Key Points:

  • INST is an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology under Government of India.
  • Scientists have outlined the procedure by which the compound based on the phosphomolybdate cluster kills the cancer cells. This research has been published in the Dalton Transactions journal.
  • Polyoxometalates (POMs) family is a developing class of inorganic metal oxides.
  • To study the procedure of how the cancer cells are bombarded by the compound, the team synthesised it by hydrothermal method.
  • The aqueous mixture of phosphorus acid, bipyridine and sodium molybdate was heated in a pH 4 solution of acetate buffer at 160 °C for 72 hours.
  • The determination of in vitro cytotoxicity of the compound was done on lung cancer (A549), breast cancer (MCF-7) and liver cancer (HepG2) cells by the conventional MTT assay was further compared with a chemotherapeutic agent, Methotrexate (TCI).
  • The procedure of cell death happening in lung cancer (A549), breast cancer (MCF-7) and liver cancer (HepG2) cells were assessed using an Alexa Fluor 488 annexin V/dead cell apoptosis kit (Invitrogen).
  • To find out the impact of the synthesised materials on the cell division, cell cycle analysis for the A549, MCF-7 and HepG2 cell lines was done by using flow cytometry.
  • The in vitro results presented that this hybrid solid is less harmful to healthy cells, and its antitumor activity was also found to be comparable with that of a chemotherapeutic agent, Methotrexate (MTX).
