International Children’s Book Day

The International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is observed every year on 2 April and is a yearly event supported by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

Key Points:

  • The day was founded in 1967 and is observed on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday.
  • Every year a different National Section of IBBY is the international sponsor of ICBD.
  • A theme is decided, and prominent authors from the host country are invited to write a message to the children across the globe. Additionally, a well-known illustrator is invited for poster designing.
  • The day is used as a platform for encouraging reading and promoting books.
  • Many events and celebrations are held in schools and Public Libraries with the objective of promoting reading.

  • The IBBY is a Switzerland based non-profit organization founded by Jella Lepman with the objective of bringing children and books together.
  • IBBY was founded in 1953 in Zurich in Switzerland and is headquartered at Basel in Switzerland.
