International Day for Biological Diversity: 22 May

The United Nations (UN) and the world celebrated May 22, 2018 as the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB). The Day was proclaimed by the UN in December 1993 to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

The Day was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2000 to commemorate the adoption of Convention on Biological Diversity on May 22, 1992 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Theme for IDB 2018

The theme for the IDB 2018 is "Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity". The theme was chosen to mark the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity and to highlight progress made in the achievement of its objectives at the national and global levels.

Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

The Convention was opened for signature on June 5, 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Rio "Earth Summit"). The Convention entered into force on December 29, 1993, which was 90 days after the 30th ratification. As of date, 196 countries are party to the Convention.

The first session of the Conference of the Parties was scheduled for November 28 – December 9, 1994 in the Bahamas.

The Convention on Biological Diversity was inspired by the world community's growing commitment to sustainable development. It represents a dramatic step forward in the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.

The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the CBD is an international agreement which aims to ensure the safe handling, transport and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health. It was adopted on January 29, 2000 and entered into force on September 11, 2003.

The Nagoya Protocol on Access & Benefit Sharing

The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the CBD is an international agreement which aims at sharing the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way. It entered into force on October 12, 2014, 90 days after the date of deposit of the fiftieth instrument of ratification.

Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020

The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, held from 18 to 29 October 2010, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, adopted a revised and updated Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, including the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, for the 2011-2020 period.

This Plan provides an overarching framework on biodiversity, not only for the biodiversity-related conventions, but for the entire United Nations system and all other partners engaged in biodiversity management and policy development.
