International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

Every year on 2nd December, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed. This is to highlight the importance of eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, including trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, forced marriage, child labour, etc.

Key Points:

  • This day was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • On 2nd December 1949, the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others were passed by the Assembly.
  • Similarly, by resolution 57/195 on18th December 2002, the Assembly notified 2004 as the International Year to memorialise the Struggle against Slavery and also its Abolition. 
  • As per the UN, there is an estimation that around 40.3 million people are in modern slavery, which includes 24.9 in forced labour and 15.4 million in forced marriage.
  • There are 24.9 million people who are trapped in forced labour; 16 million people are exploited in the private sector like construction or agriculture, domestic work; 4.8 million people in forced sexual exploitation. Even, women and girls are disproportionately affected by forced labour that accounts for 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry, and 58% in other sectors.
  • During this day, many people will take an opportunity to share their views in writings through interviews, poetry, essays, stories, feature articles and other kinds of published material.
