INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY CELEBRATED ON 5 SEPTEMBER

Context

International Day of Charity was celebrated on 5th September.

Details about the  International Day of Charity

  • It was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.
  • It was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace."

About Mother Teresa

  • She was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910.
  • She came to India in 1929 and worked for the welfare of the poorest of the poor as well as the homeless, orphan children and people dying from terminal illness such as HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis.
  • She was honoured in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary.
  • She was born in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire

They celebrated to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.
