International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of the People with Disabilities is also known as World Disabled Day. This is observed on 3 December every year to raise awareness and develop an understanding to accept people with disabilities by the United Nations.

The theme for 2019 is Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda.

Key Points:

  • Since 1992, the World Disabled Day is being observed to promote compassion and acceptance of disability issues and also provide support for self-respect, rights and better living of the disabled persons.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) notified the year 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons. Later this resulted in the creation of a plan of action at the domestic, national and international levels, with a primary focus on equalisation of opportunities, prevention of disabilities and rehabilitation.
  • It is operationally defined as the right of human beings with disabilities to participate fully in the life and development of their societies, live their lives to the fullest as equivalent to other citizens, and have an equal share in benefits resulting from the growth of socio-economic development.
  • This year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as anticipated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as a cross-cutting issues, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The Honourable Vice President of India is the chief guest at a function to celebrate “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment on 3rd December 2019 in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. He will confer the National Awards on Individuals, Institutions, Organizations and State/District etc. for their outstanding achievements and work done towards empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
