International Day of Rural Women

15th October of every year is observed as the” International Day of Rural Women”. This day recognizes the crucial role of women and girls in ensuring the sustainability of rural households and communities, thus improving rural livelihoods and their overall wellbeing.

Theme: Rural Women and Girls Building Climate Resilience

Key Points:

  • The International Day of Rural Women was instituted by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) by passing resolution 62/136 in December 2007.
  • The first International Day of Rural Women observed on the 15th of October 2008.
  • This year’s theme highlights the important role that rural women and girls play in building resilience to face the climate crisis.
  • The theme also states -Empowered women have greater capacity to respond to climate change and their role in adopting low-carbon technologies, spreading knowledge about climate change, and urging action.
  • Thus, the International Day of Rural Women recognises the contribution and significant role played by these rural women in food security and poverty elevation.
