  • International Mother Language Day recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals focus on leaving no one behind.
  • The theme of the 2021 International Mother Language Day, “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society,” recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.
  • On November 17, 1999, UNESCO officially made the announcement in the UN General Assembly.
  • The idea was said to have been inspired by the language-based movement which was spearheaded by Bangladesh (previously known as East Pakistan) as it was on February 21 when the fight for their Bangla language gained momentum.
  • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in education, the sciences, and culture.
