Every year, May 1 is celebrated as International Workers Day.

• It is also celebrated as the  Labour Day in different parts of the world.
• It is celebrated to commemorate the contributions of workers and the historic labour movements.

History of International Workers Day.

• In 1889, the Second International declared that 1st May as International Workers’ Day
• In 1904, the 6th conference  of the Second International, called for "all Social Democratic Party organisations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate and demand for the legal establishment of the eight-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace on the First of May.

Labour Day in India

• On 1 May 1923, the first celebration in India was organized in Madras by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.
• In India, labour Day is also known as
  • "Uzhaipalar dhinam" in Tamil.
  • "Kamgar Din" in Hindi.
  •  "Karmikara Dinacharane" in Kannada.
  • "Karmika Dinotsavam" in Telugu.
  •  "Kamgar Divas" in Marathi.
  •  "Thozhilaali Dinam" in Malayalam.
  • "Shromik Dibosh" in Bengali.
