Context

Iran and six different nations have lost their democratic rights in the United Nations General Assembly as they had not taken care of their obligations.

Details

Different nations that lost their democratic rights were Niger, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Congo Brazzaville, Central African Republic and Libya.

According to the Article 19 of the UN Charter:

  • A member shall have no voting rights if it has dues in the payment of its monetary commitments to the UN.
  • The Charter provided 2 years of grace period. That is, in the event that the overdue debts are forthcoming for over two years, at that point the democratic rights are suspended.

United Nations General Assembly

  • The United Nations General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, serving as the main deliberative, policy-making, and representative organ of the UN.
  • Its powers, composition, functions, and procedures are set out in Chapter IV of the United Nations Charter.
  • All 193 Member States of the UN are represented in the General Assembly, making it the only UN body with universal representation.
  • Each year, in September, the full UN membership meets in the General Assembly Hall in New York for the annual General Assembly session, and general debate, which many heads of state attend and address.
  • The President of the General Assembly is elected each year by assembly to serve a one-year term of office.
