JAMMU HAS GOT X-BAND DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR

JAMMU HAS GOT X-BAND DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR

Context:

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, an X-band doppler weather radar has been installed here to provide advanced weather services to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

About the Radar:

  • Union minister Jitendra Singh will dedicate the radar along with an indigenous GPS based pilot-sonde to the public at the meteorological office in Jammu.
  • The state-of-the-art GPS based pilot-world environment helps collect data from all weather conditions with minimal human intervention and has the resources to automatically detect balloon launches and balloon blasts.
  • The new radar will help provide a forecast (the shortest forecast of up to three hours) for all types of severe weather conditions affecting the region, especially thunderstorms, lightning, eruptions and heavy rain.
  • It would also assist in providing weather forecasts in various fields, including tourism forecasts for pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra which has an average footfall of 8.5 million every year.
  • It will also provide inputs for weather forecasting models for the purpose of making better weather forecasts.
  • By combining data from other sensors such as satellites and automatic weather stations, better forecasts and warnings can be achieved leading to fewer losses of property and life, thus providing better social security and social and economic benefits.
