Jio overtakes Airtel to become India's 2nd largest operator by users

Reliance Industries' telecom unit Jio pipped rival Bharti Airtel to become India's second-largest operator by subscribers as of May 2019. As of the end of May, the operator had added 8.2 million users since April to end the month with 323 million wireless customers.

As per data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI),

  • Vodafone Idea was the top operator with 387.6 million customers. Vodafone Idea has 33.36% of the market share.
  • The total number of wireless subscribers in the country marginally declined from 1,162.30 million to 1,161.86 million.
  • The private operators accounted for 89.72% of the total cellular subscribers in the country, whereas the state-owned BSNL and MTNL had a 10.28% market share.
