Kangra Tea might help in lowering coronavirus activity

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will replace hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) with anti-HIV drugs to enhance immunity and reduce replication of the virus in the revised protocol.

  • Dr Sanjay Kumar, Director, Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), based in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh has stated that the chemicals in Kangra tea could prove effective in enhancing immunity.
  • He based his statement on the fact that coronavirus activity can be blocked better by the chemicals of Tea than anti-HIV drugs.
  • In the webinar organized at IHBT on the occasion of the International Tea Day, discussions were held on the benefits of Kangra tea for society and industry.
  • The medicinal properties of Kangra tea are beneficial for human health and for combating COVID-19 disease.
  • Scientists at the institute screened over 65 bioactive chemicals that could efficiently bind to a specific viral protein better than the available anti-HIV drugs approved for treating COVID-19 patients.
  • IHBT is an institute functioning under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and has also produced alcohol-based hand sanitizer which contains tea extract and natural aromatic oils through its technology partners.
