KANPUR METRO RAIL PROJECT

Context:

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the completed section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project on 28 December 2021. Improving urban mobility has been one of the Government's focus areas. The launch of the completed phase of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project is yet another step in this direction.

About Kanpur Metro Rail Project:

• This completed 9 Km long section runs from IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel.
• The total length of the Metro Rail Project in Kanpur is 32 Km, with 2 corridors where 13 km will be underground.
• It was built at a cost of more than Rs 11,000 crore. 
• In Corridor 1 there will be 21 metro stations and 8 metro stations in Corridor 2.
• The 9 km long stretch of the Kanpur Metro Rail project launched consists of 9 metro stations between Kanpur and Motijheel. 
• The cost of completing the project is R11076.48 Cr, with a completion period of 5 years.
• The Kanpur Metro Rail Project consists of 2 corridors. The first tunnel from ‘IIT Kanpur to Naubasta’ is 23.8 km long and the second tunnel from ‘Chandrashekar Azad Agriculture University to Barra-8’ is 8.6 km long.
