KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK AND TIGER RESERVE CENSUS

Context:

On January 19, 2022, the eastern wetlands of Kaziranga National Park and the Tiger Reserve census recorded 868 deer, including 173 males, 557 females, and 138 yearlings.

Key Points:

  • The census also noted a slight decrease in population compared to the 907 censuses in 2018.
  • From December 21 to December 27, the counting of wetland birds was conducted, encompassing the whole Kaziranga Tiger Reserve.

Wetland Birds Count:

  • Wetland birds census was also conducted at Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, while 66,776 birds of 126 species used the Point Count method.
  • 42,205 birds were counted in the parking area and 24,571 in Laokhowa and Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary.

Deer Count:

  • The slowdown in deer population compared to 907 enumerated in 2018 was after two significant floods in the interim 2019 and 2020.
  • Territory-wise - 62 under Biswanath Wildlife Division, 20 under Nagaon Wildlife Division, and 786 under Eastern Assam Division have been recorded by experienced and trained wildlife experts.

Birds Count:

  • The birds were counted in 211 different points in 157 water areas comprising 35 counting groups, including volunteers from local educational institutions, NGO officials, and senior staff of the Department of Forestry.
