Kerala Government passed a resolution to roll back the Citizenship Amendment Act

Kerala has become the first state in India to pass a resolution which demands to rollback of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The Kerala assembly passed a resolution against the CAA on 31st December, 2019.

Key Points:

  • Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had moved the anti-CAA resolution in a special one-day session. He stated that the CAA act contradicts the basic values and principles of the Constitution.
  • He also argued that the CAA was against the "secular" outlook and fabric of the country and that it would lead to religion-based discrimination in granting citizenship.
  • The CM noted that the act had actually triggered widespread protests among various strata of society and dented India's image in front of the international community.
  • He assured that there won’t be any detention centers in the state.

Background:

  • The Citizenship (Amendment) bill was introduced in 2016. The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 was passed in December 2019. The act amended Citizenship Act of 1955.
  • It allows Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, Christians and Parsi migrants, who are religious minorities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, to gain Indian citizenship within five years of stay in India
