Largest plasma therapy Trial “Project Platina” launched in Maharashtra

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra has launched the largest plasma therapy trials of the world to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The project has been named “Project Platina”.

Key Points:

  • The objective of the project is to create robust and strong data for the treatment of the disease, which does not have any specific line of treatment.
  • The project will assist the state in the creation of infrastructure for the line of treatment in the worst-hit state of the country affected by COVID-19.
  • The use of Convalescent Plasma Therapy (CPT) or Plasma therapy, has proved to be successful in fighting other diseases and infections related to the coronavirus like MERS and SARS and it has also shown promising results on patients, in its use in combating the COVID-19 infections throughout the country.
  • The government will conduct trials in 17 medical colleges throughout the state, which comprise 1.64 lakh cases of coronavirus out of the national total of 5.48 lakhs.
  • The “Project Platina” will be funded through the CM Relief fund and will be free of cost.
  • Permission for the conduction of the trial was given by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) in only 21 state-run hospitals of which two are located in Mumbai - Nair Hospital and Kasturba Hospital, later the council approved 16 other medical colleges and some private hospitals.
