Lifeline Udan

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched the ‘Lifeline Udan’ to help the public in the war against Coronavirus pandemic. Under the initiative, flights are being operated for the transfer of essential medicines and medical supplies.

Key Points:

  • Under the ‘Lifeline UDAN’ initiative, 97 flights have been operated by Alliance Air, Pawan Hans, IAF, Air India, and private carriers.
  • Out of the 97 flights 71 have been operated by Alliance Air and Air India.
  • Under the flights taken by Lifeline Udan, around 119 tons of Cargo has been transported as on 3 April 2020, and an aerial distance of more than 1 lakh km has been covered.
  • Under the initiative medical equipment, testing kits, COVID-19 related reagents, enzymes, Personal protective equipment (PPE), gloves, masks, and other material of importance have been included in the Cargo.
  • The Lifeline Udan flights are operating in a hub and spoke model, and major centres have been established at Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
  • Lifeline Udan flights connect these hubs to locations like Agartala, Aizawl, Dimapur, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Dibrugarh, Goa, Guwahati, Imphal, Raipur, Ranchi, Port Blair and Trivandrum.
  • Particular emphasis has been kept on the North East Region (NER), island territories and the hilly states.
  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation, IAF and Air India have collaborated closely for last-mile deliveries to Dimapur, Guwahati, Imphal, Ladakh and Port Blair.
  • On the international level, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Air India is working with Chinese authorities to establish a cargo air-bridge between India and China for critical medical supplies.
