LIVERPOOL REMOVED FROM THE LIST OF UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Context:

On 21st July 2021, Liverpool was removed from the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. It was granted the title in 2004.

Key Highlights About the Decision:

• The decision was made after a secret ballot was done by the UNESCO committee. They voted in favour of taking Liverpool off this status.
• UNESCO cited concerns about overdevelopment, including plans for a new football stadium.
• A $7 billion dollar regeneration plan for its historic waterfront caused its removal from the list. The project also incorporates the building of luxury apartments.
• At committee talks chaired by China, 13 delegates voted in favour of the proposal and 5 against, just one more than the two-thirds majority required to delete a site from the global list.

Liverpool:

• In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was one of the world’s significant trading centres.
• In 2012 it was placed on the list for World Heritage in Danger.

World Heritage Site:

• It is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. World Heritage Sites are designated by UNESCO for having historical, cultural, scientific or other forms of significance.
