Low-cost catalyst for hydrogen generation from water developed by CeNS

A cost-effective and efficient way has been developed by the scientists from the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), for the generation of hydrogen from water by utilizing Molybdenum dioxide as a catalyst.

Key Points:

  • It has been shown that Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) nanomaterials when heated and cooled in the atmosphere of hydrogen, can serve as efficient catalysts for the reduction of energy input to enable water splitting with high efficiency.
  • Splitting water through Electrolysis is a promising step for the generation of hydrogen, but energy input is required, which can be reduced by using a catalyst.
  • Platinum can be replaced with Molybdenum dioxide as it is low cost and effective, unlike Platinum which is expensive and has limited resources.
  • The MoO2 catalyst is very stable for reactions of long durations and can aid in sustained hydrogen evolution from water.
  • Using MoO2, the efficiency of about 80 % conversion of electrical energy into hydrogen has been achieved.
  • As a clean and sustainable energy source of the future, hydrogen produces water on energy generation without any carbon footprint and can be generated from water.
