MAHARASHTRA - FIRST STATE TO ISSUE EDUCATIONAL DOCUMENTS USING BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY

Context:

Maharashtra will be the 1st state in the country to issue educational documents using blockchain technology.

About the Venture:

• Around one million diploma certificates will be issued using this technology.
• Around 10 lakh digital certificates will be issued to diploma holders of 8beducational years.
• Currently, Malta, Singapore, and Bahrain are the only other countries using this technology.
• For this, the Maharashtra government has partnered with LegitDoc, a Bengaluru-based blockchain startup, owned by Crossforge Solutions Pvt. Ltd.
• According to Technology provider Legit Doc’s, each student will receive a “certficate_LegitDoc.zip” digital file containing the original PDF diploma certificate and its corresponding blockchain proof file. It can be checked within 10 seconds from anywhere around the globe and does not require human intervention.

Why has this step been taken?

• Forgery of documents is a genuine worry for different educational and other institutions. Numerous means are being taken to stay away from forgery along with verification of documents. The Maharashtra State Board of Skill Development has chosen to issue block chain based certificates to students.

• Blockchain is a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system.
