Maiden Flight of Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator

Context: DRDO conducts successful maiden flight of Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator.

 

Key Highlights: 

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), on July 01, 2022, carried out the successfully maiden flight of the Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator from the Aeronautical Test Range Chitradurga, Karnataka. 
  • It operated in fully autonomous mode, and the aircraft exhibited a perfect flight, including take-off, waypoint navigation and a smooth touchdown. 
  • This flight marks a major milestone in proving critical technologies for the future development of unmanned aircraft. 
  • Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a premier research laboratory of DRDO, designed & developed the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. It is powered by a small turbofan engine. 
  • The airframe, undercarriage and entire flight control and avionics systems used for the aircraft were developed indigenously.

Significance: 

It is a significant move toward self-reliance in such strategic defence technologies and is considered a major achievement toward autonomous aircraft. This has the potential to pave the way for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in terms of critical military systems.
