Measures Taken by CCMB to fight COVID19 pandemic

The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology(CCMB), based in Hyderabad, functioning under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR) is employing numerous approaches and tools to combat COVID-19 pandemic.

Key Points:

  • CCMB is authorized for testing COVID-19 and gets patient samples from government hospitals spread throughout Telangana’s 33 districts to check for SARS-CoV-2 virus.
  • The test capacity at CCMB at present is 350 samples in a day.
  • Twenty-five medical doctors, paramedical and technical staff and students from five government hospitals - NIMS, IPM, Govt Fever Hospital in Hyderabad and Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal have also been trained.
  • Moreover, training videos have been created by CSIR-CCMB about the best practices for handling patient samples and on real-time Polymerase Chain reaction(rt-PCR).
  • The videos and information are accessible to authorized centres and can be obtained by contacting the director of CCMB.
  • The CSIR labs are also doing genome sequencing of the Coronavirus and analysis to map the complete genome sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
  • The SARS-CoV-2 virus is being cultured to test New and repurposed Drugs by the use of various molecular modelling.
  • CCMB is also employing various precautionary measures to engage the public in conveying advisories on the pandemic by innovative methods and in regional languages on social media to reach a larger population.
