Meeting held between 15th Finance Commission World Bank on Health Sector

The World Bank and its High level Group (HLG) on Health Sector held a meeting with the Fifteenth Finance Commission on 7 July 2020. The deliberation focused on a better understanding of the outlines and areas of the Health Sector in India.

Key Points:

  • The meeting was held by the 15th Finance commission with representatives of the  Commission’s High level group on the health sector, Niti Aayog and the World Bank to reprioritize the health spending of the government.
  • Under the meeting, the development and roll-out of real time surveillance and reporting systems for surveillance of Animal and Human Health was decided, keeping in view that the origin of future outbreaks will be zoonotic.
  • The meeting also held deliberations on measures to strengthen the state and national institutions to prepare for pandemics effectively.
  • The government has also set a goal to develop the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as a global centre for excellence in medical research.
  • The finance commission has also devoted a complete chapter on health financing for the first time.
  • India and the World Bank have completed a 20 years partnership recently in the area of HIV and the focus on the health sector will serve as an important foundation for economic growth and development.
