Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate amends EIA Notification

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has amended the Environment Impact Assessment(EIA) Notification 2006 to increase the availability and production of several drugs.

The notification was amended on 27 March 2020.

Key Points:

  • The ministry has categorized all projects and activities again concerning bulk drugs under the amendment from the existing category ‘A’ to ‘B2’ category.
  • Proposals received till September 2020 will be eligible for re-categorization under the amendment.
  • The main aim is to generate a solution for the COVID-19 pandemic and increase the availability of various drugs.
  • Compulsory Environmental Impact Assessment is required for projects falling under Category ‘A’ including the collection of baseline data and public consultations, whereas plans under ‘B2’ category are free from the assessment.
  • The re-categorization will help in fast-tracking the process and decentralizing appraisals to the state level, thereby increasing the availability of the essential drugs and medicines in India in a short time.
  • The use of digital technology like video conferencing will ensure fast disposal of the proposals in a time limit.
