MINISTRY OF TEXTILES CLEARED 20 STRATEGIC RESEARCH PROJECTS

Context:

On January 17, 2022, the Ministry of textiles cleared 20 strategic research projects, costing Rs 30 crores, in specialty fibres and geotextiles.

Key Highlights:

• The Rs 30 crore strategic research projects fall under the government's 'National Technical Textiles Mission' program.
• Among the 20 research projects, 16 projects of specialty fibres were cleared, including:
• five health care projects,
• four industrial and defence projects,
• three power storage projects,
• three textile recycling projects,
• one agricultural and four Geotextiles (Infrastructure) projects
• The projects were cleared at a meeting chaired by Union Textile Minister Piyush Goyal.
• Various leading Indian institutions, Centres of Excellence, and government organisations including IITs, DRDO, and BTRA, participated.

National Technical Textiles Mission:

• The National Technical Textiles Mission was launched to establish India as a global leader in textile technology and increase the use of technical textiles in the domestic market.
• It aims to take home market capitalization to $ 50 billion by 2024.
• This policy will be implemented for four years, from 2020-2021.
• The Ministry of Textiles has established a Mission Directorate.
