MONKEYPOX VIRUS

Context:

According to health officials, more than 200 people in 27 US states are being tracked for possible rare monkeypox infections.

Monkeypox:

  • It is a rare disease that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus.
  • Monkeypox virus is related to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae.
  • The Orthopoxvirus genus also incorporates the vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), variola virus (the cause of smallpox) and cowpox virus.
  • The 1st case of monkeypox in humans was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Countries Affected:

  • Human monkeypox infections have only been documented s6 times outside of Africa; in the United States in 2003 (47 cases), and Israel (1 case) in 2018, in both the United Kingdom (3 cases), in Singapore in 2019 (1 case) and in both the United Kingdom (3 cases) and the United States (1 case) in 2021.

Signs and Symptoms of Monkeypox:

  • Monkeypox begins with fever, muscle aches, headache, and exhaustion.
  • The difference between symptoms of smallpox and monkeypox is that monkeypox causes lymph nodes to swell while smallpox does not.
  • The incubation period for monkeypox is usually 7−14 days but can range from 5−21 days.

Transmission of Monkeypox:

  • Transmission of monkeypox virus occurs when a person comes into contact with the virus from a human, an animal, or materials contaminated with the virus.

Treatment of Monkeypox:

  • Currently, there is no proven, safe treatment for monkeypox virus infection.
