MoU signed between Coir Board and IIT-Madras

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Coir Board to set up a “Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the application of Coir exclusively or in combination with other natural fibers.”

Key Points:

  • The premier educational institution had done the verification of the research studies undertaken by the Coir Board and other agencies in India on Coir Geo-Textiles (CGT) earlier.
  • The institute recommended the use of CGT successfully preventing erosion of soil in river embankments, slopes, stabilization of mine slope dumps, etc.
  • CGT can also be employed as reinforcement material in low volume rural roads.
  • The research work will be further enhanced by the Centre of Excellence (CoE) with assistance from the team of experts of IIT Madras in the coir sector.
  • Assistance will be provided by the Centre of Excellence for generating Intellectual Property Rights and technology transfer.
  • Initial financial support of Rs 5 crores will be provided by the Coir Board for two years to establish and run the Centre of Excellence.
  • The Centre of Excellence has identified 27 areas of Research and Development to be taken up in the Coir industry, along with the ten in-house projects, in machinery development and road projects of IITM.
