Nano Coated Filter developed by IIT Madras Researchers for Healthcare Workers

A nano-coated filter media has been developed by the researcher’s working at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras for health care workers that are involved in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Key Points:

  • The applications of the filter are also present in the field of defence and other situations where it is necessary to filter air at the level of submicron.
  • The fabrication of the nano-coated filter has been done from a nylon-based polymer coating on the cellulose paper and was developed via the process of electrospinning.
  • The coating property of the material helps in removing dust particles of submicron size efficiently from the air.
  • The nano-coated filter media is undergoing field tests in practical applications.
  • Following the validation of the filter in field trials, it will be manufactured in bulk through the collaboration with industries.
  • The Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) funded the pioneering work for defence applications, and it was repositioned in the field of healthcare applications due to the need of the hour.
  • The applications of the nano-coated filter media:
  1. Air purification system in operation theatres of hospitals
  2. Air filters for the armoured vehicle engines
  3. Cabin air filters for the comfort and health of air passengers
  4. Computer hard disk drive filters
  5. Face masks with an enhanced particle filtration efficiency
  6. Respirator devices, and
  7. Pneumatic equipment.
