Nanoparticles formulated by INST scientists to reduce severity of rheumatoid arthritis

A nanoparticle has been formulated by the researcher’s working at the Institute of Nano Science & Technology (INST), Mohali, an autonomous institute functioning under the Department of Science and Technology Government of India for reducing the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.

Key Points:

  • The nanoparticles have been formulated from chitosan, and these were loaded with zinc gluconate.
  • The Zinc element is important for the maintenance of normal bone homeostasis and patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis have lower levels of the element.
  • Administration of the zinc orally in the form of zinc gluconate has very low bioavailability in humans.
  • To increase the absorption of zinc, chitosan has been selected, which is a biodegradable, biocompatible natural polysaccharide and is among the most abundant biopolymers obtained from the exoskeleton of crustaceans.
  • Chitosan has been selected by the INST team due to its mucoadhesive and non-toxic nature.
  • The treatment of rats with both zinc gluconate and zinc gluconate loaded chitosan nanoparticles decreased the severity of arthritis by reducing erythema, edema and joint swelling and zinc gluconate loaded nanoparticles showed much higher efficiency.
  • Nanobiotechnology offers many effective solutions for problems that cannot be addressed by traditional pharmaceutical formulations like the targeted and sustained release of drugs, improved efficiency of drugs and nutraceuticals, bioavailability etc.
