NASA launches ICON satellite to explore the region where air meets space

NASA launches ICON satellite to explore the region where air meets space

To explore the mysterious, dynamic region where air meets space NASA launched a satellite on 10th October 2019.  The satellite was dropped from a plane flying over the Atlantic off the Florida coast.

  • The ICON satellite, short for Ionospheric Connection Explorer rocketed into orbit following a two-year delay.  After five seconds the satellite's release, the attached Pegasus rocket ignited, sending Icon on its way.
  • The 634-pound (288-kilogram) ICON satellite carries instruments to track variability in the ionosphere. This is a layer in the upper atmosphere where the auroras are generated where certain conditions can impact satellite communications, GPS navigation and electrical grids.
  • A refrigerator-sized satellite soared into the orbit aboard an air-launched Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket  over the Atlantic Ocean, finally setting off on a $252 million mission to probe the dynamic boundary region where space and Earth’s atmosphere meet.
  • The more scientists know, the better spacecraft and astronauts can be protected in orbit through improved forecasting.
  • The refrigerator-size ICON satellite will measure the charged environment right around the spacecraft which is at a level of 580 kilometres above the Earth’s surface.
  • The refrigerator-size ICON satellite will study the airglow formed from gases in the ionosphere.
  • NASA’s Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, satellite rode to space at the tip of the winged Pegasus XL launcher on a mission delayed more than two years by problems with the rocket.
