NASA SOLVES JUPITER’S X-RAY AURORAS MYSTERY

Context

Jupiter's Auroras emit X-rays. For a number of years, scientists were searching the reason behind these X-Ray emissions from the visual treat. NASA, after 40 years, has solved that mystery now.

NASA’s Step:

  • The National Aeronautics and Space Association (NASA) has posted an image on Instagram saying that another of Jupiter's mysteries has been solved.
  • In the image posted by NASA, the mega-storms on the planet are plainly visible.
  • The purple hue of Auroras seen at both poles of the planet.
  • Scientists knew that Auroras are caused by ions crashing into Jupiter's atmosphere but now they know how the X-Ray causing ions enter the atmosphere of the planet.

About the Reason Behind the Mystery:

  • NASA says that ions responsible for X-ray emissions are 'surfing' the electromagnetic waves in Jupiter's magnetic field to enter the planet's atmosphere.

Aurora:

  • An aurora, sometimes referred to as polar lights, northern lights, or southern lights, is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic).
  • It is the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind.

Jupiter:

  • Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System.
  • It is a gas giant with a mass more than two and a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined.
