NASA’s names headquarter building after ‘Mary W.Jackson’

The administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Jim Bridenstine has announced on 24 June 2020 that the headquarters building of the agency will be named after Mary W. Jackson who was the first African American female engineer at NASA.

Key Points:

  • Mary W. Jackson was a mathematician and aerospace engineer and led the programs which influenced the promotion and hiring of women in engineering, mathematics, science and technology careers at NASA.
  • Jackson joined the agency in 1951 for Aeronautics, which was succeeded by NASA in 1958 and worked under fellow Dorothy Vaughan in the segregated West Area Computing Unit.
  • She was posthumously honoured with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2019.
  • She gained more recognition after the book titled “Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race” was launched by Margot Lee Shetterly in 2016.
  • With the announcement, NASA has also announced that it will continue recognizing the contributions of women, African-Americans, and individuals from various backgrounds who have made the exploration history of NASA successful.
  • The headquarter building of NASA is situated on the ‘Hidden Figures Way’ in Washington, D.C.
