National Immunization Day

National Immunization Day

The National Immunization Day was observed all over India on 19th January 2020 as a part of the Pulse Polio Programme, 2020. Around 17.4 crore children of age less than 5 years were administered polio drops to sustain polio eradication in India.

Key Points:

  • The National Immunization Day (NID) is one of the four strategies that are recommended by the WHO to eradicate polio.
  • According to WHO, the NID has to be conducted twice a year.
  • There are two types of vaccines that are being administered in the country.
  • It includes IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine) and OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine).
  • India has already eliminated Polio as per global guidelines, introduced IPV in its Universal Immunisation Program to safeguard the polio-free status, since there are a few countries where the poliovirus is still circulating, and Polio is yet to be eliminated.
