NATIONAL POLIO VACCINATION DRIVE 2022

Context:

Dr Mansukh Mandavia, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, began the National Polio Immunization Drive for 2022 on February 26 by distributing polio drops to children under five.

Key Point:

"India's strategic campaign against polio is a success story of India's public health policy against vaccine-preventable diseases," Dr Mansukh Mandaviya remarked. We must remain watchful and ensure that every child under the age of five receives polio vaccine."  

Universal Immunization Programme (UIP)

The Program aims to protect children from more diseases than ever before.

Several novel vaccinations have recently been launched, such as the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), Measles-Rubella vaccine (MR), and Rotavirus vaccine.

For added safety of youngsters, the government has included "injectable Inactivated Polio Vaccine" in the immunisation programme.

Mission Indradhanush

  • The goal was to fully immunise nearly 89 lakh children under the Universal Immunization Program. They were either partially or entirely unvaccinated.
  • The mission is to immunise children under two and pregnant women.
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, tuberculosis, TB, polio, hepatitis B, meningitis and pneumonia, Japanese encephalitis (JE), rotavirus vaccine, Hemophilus influenza type B infections, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), and measles-rubella are among the 12 vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) covered (MR).
  • In some districts, vaccines against Japanese encephalitis and Haemophilus influenzae type B is available.

Initiative to boost the UIP

  • Intensified Mission Indradhanush: This was launched in 2017 to reach all children under two and pregnant women who were not included in the normal vaccine program.
  • It is primarily concerned with metropolitan regions.
  • On February 27, 2022, the Polio National Immunization Day 2022 was held.
  • Polio Immunization Program in the Pulse: Following a World Health Assembly resolution in 1988, India initiated the Pulse Polio Immunization Program in 1994-95.
  • It was created to ensure 100% coverage of the Oral Polio Vaccine.
