National Pollution Control Day

National Pollution Control Day is observed on 2 December. This day is to raise awareness about the problem caused by increasing pollution. Pollution is a significant problem that is faced by the whole world these days. It is necessary to take exact measures and combat it.

What is pollution?

Pollution can be defined as the harmful addition of any substance, whether solid, liquid or gas or any form of energy like heat, sound, etc. to the environment. Pollution is a major problem that the whole world is battling with it, where the environment is affected.

Key Points:

  • This day is observed in the memory of those who have lost their lives in the Bhopal Gas tragedy that happened on 2nd December 1984.
  • The main agenda of this day is to create awareness among people and spread awareness in the industries which cause various pollution like water, air, noise which affect the environment and health. 
  • The incident of Bhopal gas tragedy where there was leakage of poisonous gas ‘Methyl Isocyanate (MIC)’ was the worst tragedy that happened in the world. 
  • It is equally important to educate people regarding pollution to form a better or clean environment.
  • The Government in India had made many laws to combat pollution. National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) is the main governing body, which regularly conducts checks on industries to know whether they are following the rules and regulations.

  • Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act of 1974
  • Hazardous Waste (Management & Handling) Rules of 1989 
  • Chemical Accidents (Emergency, Planning, Preparedness, and Response) Rules of 1996
  • Noise Pollution (Regulation & Control) Rules of 2000 
  • Batteries (Management & Handling) Rules of 2001
  • Recycled Plastics Manufacture & Usage Rules of 1999
