Every year on February 28, National Science Day is observed to honour scientists' contributions to the nation's progress.

Key Points:

  • Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, a renowned Indian physicist, made a significant discovery in the science of spectroscopy on February 28, 1928.
  • The Raman Effect was later named after him due to his findings.
  • CV Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his contributions.

Memoire CV Raman's

CV Raman was an Indian scientist who is most recognised for his contributions in physics and light scattering. Using a spectrograph invented by Raman, he and his student K. S. Krishnan discovered that when light passes through a transparent substance, the frequency and wavelength of the deflected light change. The researchers dubbed this phenomenon "modified scattering", and it was eventually dubbed the Raman scattering or Raman effect. CV Raman got the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this discovery, making him Asia's first Nobel laureate in science.

The theme of National Science Day 2022

  • 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future.'

As stated by the Prime Minister, a four-fold integrated approach in science and technology for a sustainable future will enable us to break free from our culture of working in silos and play a leading role in the global arena.

Historical Background

The Indian government was petitioned in 1986 by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication to establish February 28 as National Science Day. After the government agreed to the suggestion, the day was dubbed National Science Day. India celebrated its inaugural National Science Day on February 28, 1987.

Significance of the day

The goal of National Science Day is to raise public awareness of science's value.
