NATIONAL SNAKEBITE AWARENESS SUMMIT IN NEW DELHI

NATIONAL SNAKEBITE AWARENESS SUMMIT IN NEW DELHI

Context:

The National Snakebite Awareness Summit was recently organized by the Integrated Health & Wellbeing (IHW) Council, in New Delhi. The conference was held on the eve of International Snake Awareness Day, which is celebrated on 19 September every year.

About the Summit:

  • Public health experts, policymakers and administrators gathered at the maiden National Snakebite Awareness Summit.
  • The summit has emphasised the need to spread awareness on means to prevent attacks by snakes as well as gather adequate data to formulate the right and better ways to treat the cases at the primary health centres.

Significance of the Summit:

  • India is registering a staggering death toll from snake bites. Most deaths are prevented with the greatest awareness and affordable health care.
  • There is no standard management system for treating snakebites - doctors and emergency workers need to learn to control snake bites but there are no modules.

Snakebite Cases in India:

  • In the 20 years from 2000 to 2019, the country recorded 1.2 million snake deaths and an estimated 58,000 deaths each year.
  • About 97% of these deaths occurred in villages and more than half of the deaths were men in their most productive years.
