Nationwide sero-surveillance planned by ICMR for the evaluation of coronavirus trend

A nationwide sero-surveillance is being planned to be conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in the future for the evaluation of the trend of COVID-19 infection among the masses.

Key Points:

  • The study will be based on a similar line of sero-survey that had been conducted earlier at a smaller scale. The final results of the sero-survey that took place in may 2020 and laid emphasis on the infections under the mid-April are still being processed.
  • Under the first phase of the sero-surveillance study, data was compiled from 65 districts out of 83 districts throughout the country and depicted that 0.73 percent of the population had evidence of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in the past.
  • The National Centre for Disease Control has conducted a sero-surveillance study in Delhi and collected 22,000 samples from 27 June to 5 July.

Note:

  • Under the sero-survey, the blood serum of selected people is tested and is used to understand the trends in the spread and presence of SARS-COV-2 or coronavirus at the district level.
  • The surveillance is an extension of the testing of flu and serious respiratory disorders that are being conducted by the government in the hospitals.
